A Saturday of experimentation

I had one of those days off where I just felt like lying in bed all day watching make up tutorials with a tub of nutella and just being super happy by myself. So I did. I was as happy as a pig in in mud. I'm in love with Wayne Goss, the YouTube sensation and make up artist who really ought to be a millionaire by now. I love his passion for make up, the fact he's a guy and how lovely and genuine he is as a person, plus he gives you really honest and helpful advice whether you're a make up artist yourself or twelve years old just looking to see what all the fuss is about. Either way I spent several hours watching him.

What usually happens after one of these sessions is I start experimenting. I was dying to go out but all my friends were doing something with work friends, or uni friends or had to be up early the next day so I had to settle for a family meal out and a big fat night in. My Uncles from London and America had traveled up for the night to see us so it felt like as good a night as any to get my glad rags on.

The first experiment was with some hair extentions I'd bought before I went on holiday but had worn once as it was too hot. They look a-mazing! I rarely wear them though as they're quite high maintenance and heavy and I always worry that someones going to see the clips. I think girls can usually tell if you've got hair extentions in but guys are pretty clueless and can't tell the difference.

Old school Hollywood glamour...

Or beach waves?

They definitely give you a more glamorous, girly look and I always feel pretty smokin when I've got them in. I'd forgotten just how fab they were so I think I'll be getting these out more often!

I went casual on the eyes with a little winged eyeliner and none on the bottom line.

I used white kohl along the bottom rim and lots of mascara to make my eyes big and doey. I also used a stippling brush to get a really matte effect with the foundation.

Outfit wise I went for this 'Next' shift dress which was £28, pretty good for 'Next'! I always get loads of people asking where I get this dress from whenever I wear it which is usually only to weddings or family get togethers. It's not quite sexy enough to wear to a club and can look too grown up which is why I save it for times when I need to look more conservative.

The necklace is from 'Urban Outfitters' for around £14 I think.

I paired it with a 'H&M' denim jacket and my 'Topshop' leather bag.

Then thick black tights and my 'Alexy' boots which I'm digging out after a whole year of not being able to wear. I can't believe it was nearly this time last year that I started at 'Topshop'! How time flies!

I don't know why I've got into the habit of pulling horrid faces when I'm meant to be being serious but I hope I grow out of it soon.

It was such a nice evening and I had a massive carvery followed by rhubarb crumble and then we all went back to my grandparents and I spent a good two hours playing with my Uncles red setter Henderson.

And that's all folks!

OOTW

This week I made all about my friends and organised a night out in our old Uni town.

I've been really loving my MAC bronzer mixed with a tiny bit of 'Nars' blusher in the famous 'Orgasm' shade. When I originally bought this I thought it was too red toned for my skin shade and rarely ever used it. I've found mixed with the golden tones of the bronzer it really makes the apples of your cheeks pop.

I've found similar shades by 'Bourjois' that seem to be more pink toned and stay on a little better so I think for the price of 'Nars' you could find very similar ones with better staying power.

I've got a little addicted to these cami's by 'Topshop' which is unfortunate as they're £18 a go and we're getting into Autumn now. I just love them under cardigans and they're not too low, they just have a really nice shape to them and there's so many colours. I love a simple top so I can't say no!

For the big night out I wore my black jersey pencil skirt, crop top and 'Gwenda's', all by 'Topshop' of course. I had planned on wearing a playsuit but my little sister ROBBED it and it's unlikely I'll ever see it again so this was an outfit I grabbed mere moments before I went to get the train. I felt the skirt was a little too classy for the club we were going to so I rolled it up a tad and kept my hair down and my make up smokey.

Gorgeous friends!

We had an amazing night and it was lovely to catch up with everyone.

I went on a kind of 'date' later in the week. I say kind of because it's someone I've known for a long time so it was more of a catch up. I kept my make up super minimal as he's seen me without make up plenty of times so I didn't really have to dress up to impress him.

I just put concealer on my eyelids and no eyeliner whatsoever, just mascara.

I had an allergic reaction to my new 'Clinique' face cream so I had to go pretty heavy with the foundation but my natural face oils always seem to make it look nice and dewy rather than caked on. The difference is appying a little with the right brushes, letting it set and then going back later for touch ups if you have the time rather than doing three layers straight away.

I added a bit of lip balm and 'Whimsical' by 'Topshop' lipstick which is my all time favourite shade.

I wore my favourite cardigan by 'Primark' and 'Jamie' jeans, a burgundy pleated top and my 'Alexa' boots all by 'Topshop'.

I think the overall look was pretty casual and pared back but still girly without being really fashion. It's always hard to know what to wear on dates because guys tend to go really casual (especially younger guys). It's best to know the place you're going to so you know what the usual dress code is but more importantly just dress how you think is appropriate. If you feel super confident in what you're wearing whether that's a ball gown or board shorts.

Dates!

I've done some pretty extensive research into the field of dating, love and relationships and the one thing I've learnt above all else is...

1. Go with your gut instinct

This rules applies to everything from what to wear on the first date, if it's going to go anywhere, if he's not the guy/girl for you and when to break up. There have been times I haven't had faith in my own judgement and have stayed in situations longer than I should have and when I've looked back I've wondered why on earth I didn't see the red flags. Sometimes love is blind or you see and hear what you choose to believing in your own warped fairy tale when you're actually in a horror story. Learn to trust your own judgement and if something doesn't feel right to you or you're not sure if something was out of line then you're probably spot on. Don't be afraid to call people out on bad behavior! Your self respect is worth a lot more than anything they have to offer.

Some people go on dates with people 'just to see' but from experience I say don't bother. If you're not super excited and getting nervous and full of butterflies then something isn't right and yes, a year or two in you may not still feel like that but on the first date you definitely definitely should! I would much rather go on a date with someone I really liked and get rejected afterwards than go on a date with someone who I wasn't sure about and be the one doing the rejecting. I can take being rejected, the horror of having to let someone else down lingers with me for far far longer!

The second rule is...

2. Be yourself

This sounds ridiculously simple but we're all guilty of pretending to be into a band or dressing a certain way that we think the person we're into likes. But you want to know that they like you for you so I say dress how you like whether that's a full face of make up and high heels at all times or a waterproof mac and wellies on and off the field. If you're someone who likes to dance stupidly in clubs and has a random sense of humour then don't pretend to be serious and grown up because one way or another it's going to come out. There will be someone who appreciates all the little things that make you different and special and if the person you're dating doesn't know the real you then you're not giving them a chance to see all those things.

The third rule is...

3. Enjoy the moment

Sometimes we can get so caught up in where is this going and what's happening and how do I feel about this we forget to just enjoy it. Don't put pressure on each other to be perfect or to measure up to your friends relationships or your families expectations. You may only get together for a few months and then leads to a life long friendship or it might span tens of years, you just don't know. So whilst it's nice to hope it might last forever or want to plan for the future you may one day look back and wish you'd spent more time enjoying those first few dates or less time being angry over the little things.

And the final rule is...

4. Appreciate each others differences

Not everyone is going to be exactly the same as you but it doesn't mean you can't be compatible. Obviously there are things you shouldn't budge on such as where you want to live, if you want to have kids and whether marriage is important to you but the little things just need some compromise. If they're not big on expressing emotion and you are try to look at the nice gestures they do rather than the big words. If they're messy or quiet or impulsive or cautious try to appreciate what that brings to the table and let little things you don't like so much about them go. You can't change a person!

Bits and Bobs.

First of all I have some news. I'M GOING TO BE A BIG SISTER AGAIN! For the fourth time! Which means I'm officially the team leader and my little sister is now going to be the forgotten middle child and our new baby brother or sister is going to be picked on and spoilt in equal measures. My two brothers I just leave to their own devices. I'm so excited! I'm not a big fan of kids if I'm honest but I am a big fan of dressing kids up in baby vans, converse and UGG boots which as the eldest is my responsibility to do. And I'm definitely taking it to Disneyland as soon as it's old enough to hold it's head up so I can put a set of Minnie or Mickey ears on it's tiny head :D

In celebration of family here are two pictures of me and little sister:

She was and still is my all time favourite thing but when we were little we were either the best of friends or absolutely hating each other, similar to most sisters I expect! I still have scars from when she used to scratch me in fights and once she threw an entire glass of apple juice all over me during an argument! We're totally different in some aspects but completely the same in others, I'd say she's a lot louder than me and has lots of friends (although not all that great) whereas I'm more introverted and have a close circle of friends I've known all my life. We don't look the same, don't dress the same and we approach problems completely differently. We also have had completely different upbringings despite living in the same house, my parents were incredibly strict with me but by the time she got to my age (she's five years younger) there were no rules in our house, her parents had gone their separate ways and I'd moved to another city when she was still in high school. Our sense of humour is exactly the same though and whenever we're together we always end up crying with laughter. And that's really all I want in a sister! Everyone in my family is hilarious so I'll be bitterly disappointed if the new addition is boring.

In other news...

I went to a place called 'Iron Bridge' which is an old villlage set in Victorian times and you haven to change your money into ha'pennies and farthings at the bank before you go in. Everyone's dressed in Victorian clothes and you can get your picture taken dressed up and there's an old funfair and you can basically just pretend to be living in Victorian times for the day. There's a school and a bakery and a sweet shop and a dress makers and a pharmacy. I've been loads of times and finished the whole thing in about an hour. A good day out though if you've got little ones.

You can tell Winter's on its way! I came home from a hard day at work and my sister had set up chairs in the shed and got her duvet and started the chiminea out so I popped on my UGG's and pj's, got some wine and chocolate puddings and we stayed out there chatting into the night. It was great!

I've also been doing some shopping...

I'd completely emptied out this pot of 'Clinique Anti-gravity Firming Lift Cream'

So I went in to get some more and it had been discontinued! I was heartbroken as since the day I'd started using it my skin was the best it had ever ever been and every day it just glowed. I tried some of their new products out, uhhmed and ahhed and eventually went for this:

I've only used it once so far but it sunk straight into my skin leaving it feeling a bit dry and lacking and it was also more of a gel than a cream so it felt too lightweight. I think companies think because people with oily skin probably don't want a heavy cream in case it clogs pores they think stripping it back will help but no. At £42 I'm hoping it'll grow on me but I've been well informed from my Nanna that 'Clinique' are always changing their formulas, she has the best skin ever though and uses 'Clinique' so I'm loath to try anything but them.

My up and coming purchase will be this 'Dior BB cream' at £30.

I got given a tester of it when I bought a 'Dior' lipstick  and didn't bother trying it out until I was having a good skin day and didn't want to put any foundation on so reached for this. I've had lots of compliments on my glowing complexion ever since! The only thing is do I really need a BB cream? I have a moisturiser, I wear sun screen and I use a light foundation anyway that seems to do the job. Me being me though I'm very certain this will be on my dressing table fairly soon. It's matte when you first put it on but does sink into your skin nicely and doesn't stick to any dry patches like foundation can do plus it has sunscreen built into it which my 'Armarni' foundation doesn't. I think I'd still put a sunscreen on under this anyway though. They also do a snow one which is factor 50 but it's only sold at Selfridges, people are raving about it on makeup alley so I think I need to go get some samples before I make my mind up.

My last purchase was a hat. My love for hats is bordering on an obsession. I have two that I've never even taken the tags off! I just think it shows pure confidence in your style if you wear a hat and gives your outfit something extra. I especially love bobble hats, you just can't go wrong with one! They're especially good if like me you have curly hair which tends to frizz or curl whenever you're walking somewhere as it keeps everything under control.

This is my new hat. It's charcoal and kind of army style but not and it was £17 from 'Accessorize'. I used to work there for about four years and I know you just can't beat them when it comes to winter hats. I actually spotted this one online and went hunting and it was pretty much meant to be as it was the only hat that fitted my tiny pea head!

Here's a run down of my personal faves...

I think this is the one I wish I could wear more often but it's very 'fashion' and draws a lot of attention which I find uncomfortable. It was from 'Urban Outfitters' and I think it was £28 which is a lot for a hat but I fell in love and all rules went out of the window. I always feel like JLo in it which is only ever a good thing.

This is the hat that I never wear! It's also from 'Urban Outfitters' and I tried it on several times, then went back for it the next day and it was gone only to be replaced with a green version. I ordered it online only for it to sell out before they could dispatch mine so it became my mission from then on to find it. I went on ebay, sent emails to head office, made the sales assistants go in search for it in another store and checked the website for fresh information religiously every day. Finally one long night at my desk I checked again and there was one in stock so I immediately bought it. I took it to Greece with me in my suitcase...never wore it! It got severely squished and now just sits on top of a lampshade in my room looking pretty. I know one day I'll wear it, maybe in Milan or Marbella sipping a cocktail on my private yacht.

This is my absolute all time favourite hat. It was from 'FatFace' and I think it was around £25 and I got it for a trip to Prague when I knew it was going to be absolutely freezing. This hat is so me and I always feel at my best when I'm wearing it. I stopped wearing it last year because the wool had come away a bit and there was a slight hole appearing and I was terrified of it getting bigger until I wore it to my best friends house one day in the middle of winter and left it hanging up with my coat. When I went to leave there was no hole in the hat. Turns out her mum Susie had spotted the hole and sewn it up for me, now I can't even tell where the hole was! There is no one who looks as good as me in a bobble hat and that is a promise!

I've also been trying to wear my hair natural and curly more often because a) it suits me and b) i'm wrecking my hair with dye and straighteners and it's not okay. The things I hate about curly hair though is how unpredictable it can be, the fact it makes me feel about 12 again and how you have to have soaking wet hair for about half the day before it starts to take shape and you don't really know what it's going to end up like. In short it's too high maintenance for me and I only leave it natural when I'm running too late to blowdry it. It's kind of going okay at the moment though probably because all the straightening has loosened the curls a bit.

Now it's getting colder again I've started wearing my usual uniform of jeans, tshirts, jumpers and UGG boots. Fashion has left the building and now it is time to get practical. I went down to 'H&M', grabbed some tshirts and have been slowly wearing one a day ever since. I really do prefer jeans a tshirt to any other outfit on the planet though so I'd be happy with that. Occasionally my inner fashion queen comes out and kicks me into shape and makes me dress up a bit but I always revert back to jeans and a tshirt.

My best friend is exactly the same. We've had a tradition where once a week she comes round and we sit in my conservatory, her with a cup of tea and me with a cider and we watch reality tv or whatever box set we're currently into (Girls season one just finished) for around five hours. She always brings me a homemade snack (last time it was peanut butter cookies) and we put the fire on and the fairy lights and relax. When we first started doing this we'd both make an effort to at least look presentable, now she'll come round and we're both in yoga pants and an oversized hoody with glasses on and our hair in pineapples. It's when I feel my most happiest :)

And finally it's been over two weeks and I've had one text from my mother telling me she was taking a boat out to an island from Havana and would be back soon. That was four days ago!

Some outfits, make up, bits and bobs...

As my dear Ma is off travelling around Cuba like the jammy moo she is, I've been left with the responsibility of looking after the home, paying the bills and generally bringing up my younger sibling. So far our neighbors have had to take the bins out every time as I've forgotten, there are piles of laundry in nearly every room and a bowl of dried pasta on the bookshelf to my left. The latter is not mine I might add.

I think I may be turning into my mum. Last night the little sister didn't get home until 5 in the morning and I couldn't sleep as I just find it impossible to settle if I know someone is coming home and I worry if they're doing okay and if anyone's being mean to them. So I sent various texts ranging from the breezy but concerned 'Everything okay? Stay safe' to the 'PUT YOUR SEATBELT ON IN THE TAXI!' I had visions of having to call my mum in Cuba and tell her the person I was meant to be looking after hadn't come home and I needed her to fly back immediately and make missing person posters with me. Thankfully she'd just had a hoot of a night out and is currently lying in bed unable to move at 4 in the afternoon.

But that's not what this post is about. I've digressed before I've even got to the topic in hand. Which is this- I noticed some post for me lying on the kitchen table before I left to catch an 11pm train and thought 'Oh it won't be anything of any real importance, I'll get it tomorrow when I come back.' I then didn't return for several days and when I finally got round to opening my post...it was a big fat tax rebate! Did I immediately cash it and go dine on lobster and woo woo's?

No, I did what a sensible person does and googled 'yoga retreats in Morocco for one'.

Anyway, as well as being in charge of the house and my mum's other sprog my manager also left for a two week vacay to Wales and left me in charge of running her award winning luxury five star spa for the rich and famous. No easy feat I can tell you! Especially when you also have a team of 8 girls with very different skill sets and personalities. So I worked 12 days out of 14 and had my mobile constantly charged and on extra loud just.in.case. And I made it! Not only did I make it but I got an email from HR saying I'd done a really good job and two emails from guests saying how lovely the therapists are and that I'd made them feel really relaxed and it was the best customer service they'd ever had! Not only that but we made target for the first time! So it was treats all round.

Which brings me to the actual post. To keep me going I rewarded myself with extra treats most days in the form of new lipsticks, a cocktail here and there and some new shoes.

So this post is a blur of all of those treats plus some life events thrown in as well.

I literally spent a whole seven days and six nights travelling between Manchester, Macclesfield, Crewe, Stoke, Stone and Staffordshire and back again and I had hardly any clothes with me. I ran into 'Primark' just as it was about to close and the person I was shopping with pointed out a pair of minty green jeans which were £12. I ran back to take a closer look and agreed they were pretty cool. So all I wore for that week were a pair of mint green jeans.

My other 'Primark' purchase was this aztek inspried cardigan which I have worn to death since the moment I bought it. Again I think it was about £12 and I've had lots of compliments since as it really doesn't look like it's from 'Primark' at all. I've got some really expensive cardigans (including a pale pink woolen one which was over £100 and I've never even worn it, how bad is it that? Don't tell).

'Primark' jeans are actually quite thin which means they hug your bum and make it look nice and peachy which is another reason why I'm liking these jeans so much.

This is my 'It's way past the time I was meant to leave my desk and I'm about to go get on yet another train and trek an hour out of my way to get home only to do this again tomorrow' outfit. I'm not very creative with my outfits when it's the working week as there is nobody on the train I want to sit next to let alone impress.

During that week I also went to a Thai and Teppanyaki restaurant which is just around the corner from where I work. It's huge and must be a pretty thriving business as each course was around £20 and it was absolutely packed. My best friend owns a Thai restaurant where they cook the food infront of you and hers has maybe four tables whereas this one had about eight and it was incredibly noisy. That may be because the prosecco is sooo nice there, my lot managed to get through five bottles and there was only eight of us!

I went for the salmon.

It was my friends birthday so the cooks all sang happy birthday to her and to about fifty other people whose birthday it was that night.

I had bought new shoes from 'Topshop', they're called 'Gwenda' and they're £58 and come in lots of colours. If I was brave enough I'd have got them in a colourful tone but as they're real suede I know I would have committed a murder had anyone stepped on them so black it had to be.

After that we went on to a Cuban club where they had dancing ladies, limbo, the can can and cocktails in teapots. It was full of twenty somethings which I was glad about as after Malia I was starting to wonder where my age group had got to. The music ranged from traditional Cuban music to James Brown and Kanye which I loved. I didn't stop dancing which is not easy in brand new stillettos and then a Cuban waiter salsa-d over to me, whispered in my ear that he loved me and then started twirling me around. I can only assume that's normal in Cuba.

One thing that hasn't left my side from the moment I bought it is this little 'Topshop' number. My friend Fran came into work with this bag that I had wanted since forever but at something ridiculous like £85 I could only dream. It's real leather so I understand the hefty price tag but as Fran is a graphic design uni student I was pretty sure it was out of her price range too. Until she told me she'd bought it for a tenner at a discount store down town and inside the pocket had been a Tiffany necklace! I instantly got her to draw me a map and off I went in search. From the outside it looks like a big warehouse and inside it's pretty much that but rows and rows of clothes, some vintage, some pretty out dated and some just pretty naff. But then there's a rack of bags by the till and there were loads of 'Topshop' bags lined up neatly waiting for me to take them home. It was like Aladdin seeing the cave of wonders for the first time! I scooped up this one for £10 and another red one I'd had my eye on also for £10.

I don't know how they had these bags for such cheap prices and I'm not asking any questions. All I know is this bag is my dream bag and I am one very happy discount shopper!

Also, my hair is growing again at an alarming rate! It was a short bob, nice and swishy last time I looked and now it reaches my shoulders. I almost miss it being short!

Other things I've had my eye on are the above. I refuse to buy them though as everyone in the world has 'Nike' blazers which is infuriating because I was wearing them back when I did Lacrosse with my dad when I was in highschool. I was still wearing them two years ago when I worked in 'Office' when they started lining up the shelves and that's when I had no choice but to stop. And now I miss them. I want them back but it's too late. These I found in 'Urban Outfitters' for £70 and they're really thin, I love the speckley design and I know they'd look brilliant with absolutely everything. I'm still uhhmming and ahhing though so I'm putting them on the wishlist until I've decided.

Another treat is this 'Diablotine' lipstick by 'Dior'. If anyone has seen the adverts for 'Dior' recently you will know the model is wearing this shade in the pictures.

I love the soft coral colour to it but because my lips are so red and pigmented it just kinda makes them redder. If I put foundation over my lips to mute them first then it looks really really pretty and shimmery and I love the creamy consistancy to it. It's made with moisturing oils so your lips don't dry out and it doesn't show up any dry bits but it does mean you have to re-apply it everytime you eat or drink.

It has a matching nail varnish too which I've lusted over for months now but I'm in a no nail polish phase so can't bring myself to part with the money to buy it right now.

As you can see it's pretty sheer and needs a couple of coats to build it up. If you have pale skin and lips this would be great for you but as I have cool toned, olive skin it just doesn't show up on my lips.

My next treats were a little less high class and I bought them on a 2 for 1 offer at Tesco. I've been using 'Clinique' face cream for a while and absolutely loving it despite what everyone says about the brand being too clinical and harsh. I've seen some amazing improvements in my skin since wearing their anti-aging face cream. However I've almost run out and it's since been discontinued (that has never happened to me before!) so I've been looking for a replacement for less than the £40 cost.

I browsed the make up and body wash aisle of 'Tesco' in a panic as I was staying in Stafford for the night and all I had was sun cream as a moisturiser. I went for this one because it has an SPF15 and a creamy texture to it.

I also went for the eye cream, again for the texture. It does make my skin more glowy and I think I can see a difference under my eyes but I'm not sure it matches up to 'Clinique' so after this runs out I may have to seriously invest. So far though I don't have any complaints.

My other treat was the much talked about 'Creme D' Nude' lipstick from 'MAC' from their cremesheen range. I'd gone in to find another lipstick I'd seen on 'Pinterest' (don't get it, I'm addicted) but in real life it was like a brick red when I was after a nude. I don't know why I get these urges for lipsticks when most days I forget to put it on but I do and I have to feed the urge or it just bothers me and I sit at my desk thinking 'My life would be amazing if I just had that nude lipstick', I'm an advertisers dream!

It's actually more of a nude colour like the above than my picture shows. You have to be careful not to completely blot out your lips as it's a very true beigey-pink nude and can make you look ill if you put too many layers on it. It's the perfect lipstick to compliment a black or brown smokey eye with a bit of bronzer which is my all time favourite make up look. This was £15 and I've worn it every day since (granted this is only the second day I've had it but still).

My last item on the old wish list is this jumper. I don't know why but I love it and I want it and I'm going to hunt it down until I find it. I think I like the fact it's pink the most. I can see myself sitting in my conservatory eating peanut butter cookies with my best friend watching films in this wearing my glasses and a pineapple bun and yoga pants and walking socks. That's honestly when I look my best!

Today's make up

I had the day off today so I slept in till lunchtime and then spent three hours getting ready. I'd booked tickets to go to 'The Comedy Store' tonight but the person I was taking broke down on the motorway so the only people who were wowed by my amazing make up were my grandparents who I'm not sure even noticed.
Oh well.

I'll talk you through it.

I don't know why I've gone for half up, half down today as I don't think I've done that since Primary School but hey, it's really working out today.

I wore my new 'MAC' lipstick and this necklace which was £14 from 'Urban Outfitters'.

I went for golden and bronzed with a pale lip and darkish smokey eyes.

I used 'Snakebite' from my 'Urban Decay Naked 2' pallette all over the lid.

Then 'Blackout' as a liner super lightly.

I powdered my forehead, nose and chin with my 'MAC' powder in medium and then a little bit of 'MAC' bronzer in natural, both from their skin finish natural range.

I put some 'Sugarbomb' by 'Benefit' on the apples of my cheeks for a bit of a shimmer. Most blushers look terrible on me as it brings out any red in my skin tone whilst bronzer brings out the golden tones, this is a great combination of both.

When I first got this bronzer I hated it, it was flat and made me look a dirty brown and the brush was no use to me who likes the fresh faced, apples of my cheeks, golden beach girl look. However, if you use this as a bit of a contouring bronzer it's absolutely brilliant.

And that's all there is to it really.

Autumn is on it's way and I need new UGG's.
